Why We are Susceptible to Vein Conditions?
- Women are more likely affected by venous insufficiencies than men
- Heredity: individuals may be predisposed based on hereditary factors
- Aging/Menopause: hormonal changes during menopause and hormone replacement therapies can cause development of veins
- Pregnancy: increase of hormone levels and blood volume can cause veins to enlarge
- Obesity/Rapid Weight Gain: the additional weight that obese/overweight individuals must sustain puts increased pressure on the body, making it more difficult for veins to function effectively
- Lifestyle: higher risk results from hormone changes from taking a birth control pill, prolonged standing or sitting, sun exposure, leg injury.
